Question:
If we tie a rope around the equator and measure its length, it will be ~ 24,818.58 miles long. If we raise the rope 1 foot above the Earth at the equator, how much longer will the rope need to be for both ends to touch?
Options:
1. 6.28 feet
2. 24.82 miles
3. 6.28 miles
4. 248.2 miles
5. I don't know
Solution:
The earth radius is
about 6400 km.So the diameter of earth is about 12800 km.The earth has not an
exat spherical shapes. So it's equatorial radius is 6.378*10^6 m or 3963 mi and
it's pole diameter is 6.357*10^6 m or 3950 mi and the radius of a sphere as volume
as earth is 6.37 *10^6 mi or 3600 mi .
Circumference is 2 *
Pi * radius.
3950 * 2 *
3.1415926535897932384626433832795 = 24818.581963359366583854882727908 miles
24818.581963359366583854882727908
* 5280 = 131042112.76653745556275378080335 feet.
If we raised the
string 1 foot above the earth how much longer would the sting need to be in
order for both ends to touch?
Calculate new radius.
3950 * 5280 + 1 =
20856001 foot radius
New circumference is:
2 *
3.1415926535897932384626433832795 * 20856001 =
131042119.04972276274234025772864 feet
Subtract the new
circumference from the original for your answer:
131042119.04972276274234025772864
- 131042112.76653745556275378080335 = 6.2831853071795864769253 feet.
Answer:
6.28 feet
Question:
Gas cost $3.50 for regular, $3.70 for premium. If you get 30 MPG using regular, what MPG do you need to get to save money if you use premium?
Options:
1. 28.6 MGP
2. 30.0 MPG
3. 30.8 MPG
4. 31.7 MPG
5. I don't know.
Answer:
This is a straightforward math question.
30/3.50 = X/3.70
If we rearrange the equation for clarity.
X/3.70 = 30/3.50
X = (30/3.5) * 3.70
X = 31.7
At these prices, if you use premium gasoline and you get at least 31.7 MPG then you will be saving money on the amount you pay for the gas.
Question:
What's the purpose of the Ball on top of a flagpole?
Options:
1. Keep birds from landing on it.
2. Used in conjunction with the halyards to help raise or lower the flag.
3. Purely decorative.
4. I don't know.
Answer:
Purely decorative.
Why is there a Black Dot in the middle of otherwise White Bird Droppings?
Options:
1. It is left over bird seed.
2. It is really poop.
3. It is ungrown feathers.
4. I don't know.
Answer:
That black dot is fecal matter. The white stuff is urine. The urine and fecal matter of birds collect together and are discarded simultaneously out the same orifice. Feces tend to sit directly in the middle of droppings because the urine, slightly sticky in consistency, clings to them.
Question:
When a Fly alights on the ceiling, does it perform a loop or a roll in order to get upside down?
Options:
Loop
Roll
Different Technique
I don't know
Answer:
Given by Dr. M. M. Galloway of the Canada Biting Fly Center.
"A fly lands by raising its forelegs above it head, making contact with the ceiling and then bring its second and hind legs forward and up to the ceiling. The fly thus flips with a landing."
"As soon as these two front legs contact the ceiling the fly will aerobatically tuck up the rest of its body and let momentum rotate it to the ceiling."
The Question:
A married couple are gathering seashells. The wife says, "Give me seven of your shells and I will have twice as many as you!" The husband answers, "Give me seven of yours and we'll have the same amount!" How many seashells does each one have?
The Options:
The wife has 12, the husband 5
The wife has 16, the husband 9
The wife has 49, the husband 35
The wife has 51, the husband 37
The Answer:
The wife has 49, the husband 35
How was that derived:
If the husband gives the wife 7 shells, he'll have 28 and she'll have 56. She'll have twice as many as he does.
If the wife gives the husband 7 shells, she'll have 42 and he'll have 42.
